The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, convened an important meeting on Wednesday to discuss several key matters and approve significant policy decisions. One of the major developments attracting public attention was the renaming of several social welfare schemes. The Central Government has also approved the continuation of its flagship National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) for another five years, extending the initiative until 2031 to strengthen and broaden social security coverage for eligible beneficiaries.
As part of the decision, the government has approved a new name for the programme: Pradhan Mantri Samajik Sahayata Yojana (Prime Minister’s Social Assistance Scheme). Additionally, the names of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi have been removed from three pension schemes operating under the programme.
The three sub-schemes have been renamed as follows:
| S. No. | Previous Scheme Name | New Scheme Name |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme | PM Old Age Pension Scheme |
| 2 | Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme | PM Widow Pension Scheme |
| 3 | Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme | PM Divyangjan Pension Scheme |
