PM addresses the inaugural session of the 4th International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure

Free Guest Post: The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, addressed the inaugural session of the 4th International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure through video message today. The session was also addressed by the Prime Minister of Australia His Excellency Scott Morrison, the President of Ghana His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Prime Minister of Japan H.E. Fumio Kishida and the President of Madagascar His Excellency Andre Nirina Rajolina.

At the very beginning of his remarks, Prime Minister Modi reminded the audience of his commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals that no one should be left behind. “That’s why we stand by our commitment to meet the aspirations of the poorest and most at-risk sections by creating next generation infrastructure,” he said. The Prime Minister said that the objective of infrastructure is to provide high quality, reliable and sustainable services to the people and the people on an equitable basis. He said, “People should be at the heart of any infrastructure development story. That’s exactly what India is doing.”

India is continuously increasing the provision of basic services in areas such as education, health, drinking water, sanitation, electricity, transport etc., in the context of which the Prime Minister said, “We are fighting climate change in a very clear way. That is why we at COP-26 are determined to achieve ‘Net-Zero’ by 2070 in parallel with our development efforts.”

The Prime Minister mentioned the importance of infrastructure for full utilization of human potential and said that the loss of infrastructure continues for generations. In this context, the Prime Minister said, “Based on the modern technology and knowledge available with us, can we build infrastructure that will last forever?” He said that this challenge is the basis of creation of CDRE. He said the alliance has expanded and made valuable contributions. He mentioned the “Infrastructure for Resilient Island States” initiative launched in COP-26 and CDRI’s work on “Resilient Airports” in respect of 150 airports across the world. Shri Modi informed that the CDRI-led “Global Assessment of Disaster Resilience of Infrastructure Systems” (Global Assessment of Disaster Resilient Status of Infrastructure Systems) will help in creation of global knowledge, which will be of great value.

The Prime Minister said that if we have to make our future fit for every circumstance, then we have to work for “Resilient Infrastructure Transition”. An all-suitable infrastructure can also be placed at the center of our extensive accommodating efforts. “If we make the infrastructure able to face the situation, then we will be able to prevent disasters not only for ourselves but for many generations to come,” he said.
