President addresses members of Gujarat Legislative Assembly in Gandhinagar

President Shri Ram Nath Kovind has said that the role of public representatives is very important in a democracy. He was addressing the members of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly at Gandhinagar today (March 24, 2022). The President said that the members of the Legislative Assembly are representatives of their regions and of the state, But it is more important that people consider him as the creator of their destiny. People’s hopes and aspirations are attached to them. He said that fulfilling these aspirations of the people should be the topmost priority for all public representatives.

He said that he is addressing the members of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly at a time when the country is celebrating the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence. The President said that what can be a better place than Gujarat to celebrate freedom and its nectar festival. The people of the Gujarat region have been a pioneer in awakening the light of independent India. In the last decade of the nineteenth century, personalities like Dadabhai Naoroji and Firoz Shah Mehta raised their voices for the rights of Indians. The people of Gujarat continued to strengthen that struggle, which resulted in the culmination of India’s independence under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.
The President said that Mahatma Gandhi not only provided leadership to India’s freedom struggle, but he also showed a new path, new ideas, and new philosophy to the whole world. Wherever there is the violence of any kind in the world today, the importance of Bapu’s mantra “non-violence” starts to be understood.

The President said that the history of Gujarat is unique. This is the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel and can be called the land of Satyagraha. The mantra of Satyagraha has been established all over the world as an infallible weapon against colonialism. Bardoli Satyagraha, Salt Movement, and Dandi March not only gave a new shape to our freedom struggle but also gave new dimensions to the method of expression of resistance and mass movement.

The President said that Sardar Patel united independent India and laid the foundation stone of administration. His statue ‘Statue of Unity’ situated on the banks of Narmada is the tallest statue in the world and it is an irresistible gift of a grateful nation to his memory. His stature in the minds of Indians is even bigger than this.

The President said that apart from politics, Gujarat has also played an important role in cultural, social and economic fields. If seen spiritually, this land of Narsingh Mehta has a lot of influence. His hymn “Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye Je Peer Parai Jaane Re” had become the anthem of our freedom struggle. This hymn also spread the human side of Indian culture. The President said that the generosity of the people of Gujarat is the main feature of Indian culture. People of all classes and communities have been living here since ancient times with the spirit of brotherhood.

The President also mentioned that Gujarat has made a remarkable contribution in the field of science in modern times. While Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha is called the father of the Indian nuclear program, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the founder of the Physical Research Laboratory, is regarded as the pioneer of Indian science, especially in India’s space research.
The President said that ever since Gujarat came into existence in 1960, it has been growing on the path of development on the basis of its enterprise and innovative thinking. He said that the White Revolution had started on the land of Gujarat itself and it has revolutionized the field of nutrition. Today India ranks first in the world in total production and consumption of milk. The milk cooperatives of Gujarat are the father of this success. He said that the Government of India has formed the Ministry of Cooperation, whose objective is to spread the success of Gujarat and the benefits of cooperative culture throughout the country.

The President said that the Gujarat Legislative Assembly has taken many revolutionary steps for the overall development of the state. Local self-government and a progressive system of education were established through the Gujarat Panchayat Bill, 1961 and the Gujarat Compulsory Basic Education Act, 1961. Gujarat is the only state where the Gujarat Infrastructure Development Act, 1999 was passed by the Legislative Assembly to encourage investment and development in infrastructure. The Gujarat Organic Agriculture University Act, 2017 was passed by the Legislative Assembly, which is important in terms of giving direction to the law keeping in view the future. The President said that for the past few years, the Gujarat model of development is being considered exemplary, which can be implemented in any state and region of the country. The Sabarmati River-front is an impressive example of urban transformation. The relationship between Sabarmati and its residents has got a new dimension, while the environment has also become safe. It can also become a good example for those cities of the country, which are populated on the banks of the river.

The President said that we are celebrating the nectar festival of freedom, so it becomes our duty to remember our freedom fighters and take meaningful steps for the bright future of the country. That is why in 2047, when India will be celebrating the centenary of its independence, then the generation of that time will be proud of its country. The President expressed confidence that the Government of India.
